abstract: This study examines the conservatism of KH. Ahmad Rifa’i's thinking on the issue of walimah written in the book Tabyin al-Islah. As a charismatic cleric of the 19th century, KH. Ahmad Rifa’i is known for his teachings that adhere firmly to Islamic law and his teachings on social practices that are considered contrary to Islamic law. This study aims to determine the form of KH. Ahmad Rifa’i's conservative thinking in responding to the implementation of walimah and those values become a form of social criticism as well as an invitation to return to pure Islamic teachings.
This study uses a normative approach with qualitative methods and library research. Primary data were obtained from the book Tabyin al-Islah, especially in the discussion section of the walimah, while secondary data came from various supporting literature such as books, journals, and relevant scientific articles. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation studies and text observations, then analyzed descriptively-qualitatively with the theoretical framework of Islamic legal conservatism which includes maintaining tradition, rejection of changes to law without a sharia basis, and an attitude of taqlid towards classical scholars.
The results of the study show that KH. Ahmad Rifa’i understands walimah as a sunnah that must be implemented by paying attention to the limits of sharia. He strongly rejects the practice of walimah mixed with sins such as entertainment that is distracting, ikhtilat, and wasteful. In fact, violations in walimah can affect the validity of the marriage contract if they damage the justice of the witnesses. This thinking reflects a form of conservatism that maintains classical Islamic teachings and rejects adjustments to local cultures that have no basis in evidence. This view is not only normative, but also becomes a social criticism of the conditions of Muslims at that time
