abstract: The ganjuran tradition is a Javanese tradition that is still preserved in Kemantren Village, Paciran District, Lamongan Regency. This tradition is an engagement carried out by the female party to the male party where this tradition has several stages of its own. An initial hypothesis emerged that women play a more dominant role in certain aspects of the tradition, which then has implications for the pattern of husband and wife relations. This dominance can be realized in decision-making, family participation, childcare and so on. This study aims to determine the pattern of husband and wife relationships of the perpetrators of the ganjuran tradition in Kemantren Village, Paciran District, Lamongan Regency.
The type of research used in this research is a field study (field research) using a gender approach with a descriptive-analytic research nature. Primary data was obtained through in-depth interviews with community leaders, traditional leaders, and couples involved in the practice of the ganjuran tradition, as well as direct observation in Kemantren Village. Secondary data were obtained from literature review, documents, and relevant regulations. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively with an inductive method to explore the relationship between adat and gender relations.
The results of this study show that the relationship pattern of husband and wife in the ganjuran tradition in Kemantren Village is characterized by a division of roles and responsibilities between the husband and wife. The husband takes on the role of family leader and primary breadwinner, while the wife assumes the role of managing the household and raising children. Nevertheless, there is recognition of the wife’s contribution in generating additional income and assisting the husband in managing the family finances.
