"This research explores the Merti Tirta tradition in Ponggok Village, Klaten\r\nRegency, as a form of local wisdom in environmental conservation, examined through\r\nthe lens of Islamic eco-theology according to Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Merti Tirta is an\r\nannual ritual centered on the preservation of natural springs, which are regarded by the\r\nlocal community as sources of blessing and life. In the context of today’s ecological crisis,\r\nthis tradition becomes significant as a cultural practice embedded with spiritual and\r\necological values. The study addresses two main questions: first, how the Merti Tirta\r\ntradition contributes to environmental preservation in Ponggok Village; and second, how\r\nthe tradition can be interpreted through the eco-theological perspective of Seyyed\r\nHossein Nasr. The aim is to understand the role of local traditions in sustaining nature\r\nand to explore the relationship between God, humans, and nature within a spiritual\r\nIslamic framework.\r\nThis study employs a qualitative descriptive method, using data collected\r\nthrough interviews, observation, and documentation. The analysis applies Nasr’s ecotheological\r\napproach, which emphasizes the sacredness of nature and the human\r\nresponsibility as khalīfah (steward) on Earth. The findings reveal that Merti Tirta\r\nfunctions not only as a cultural ritual but also as an expression of reverence for nature,\r\nperceived as sacred. Religious, social, and ecological values are interwoven in the\r\ntradition, reflecting an Islamic cosmological view as emphasized by Seyyed Hossein\r\nNasr.
