abstract: The tradition of prohibiting marriage in the month of Suro is still strongly
believed by some Javanese communities, including in the village of Kepek,
Wonosari District, Gunungkidul Regency. This belief considers the month of Suro
to be an unlucky time for holding weddings. However, there are couples who still
choose to marry during this month. This study aims to analyze the reasons behind
these couples' decisions and the social impacts they face after marriage.
This type of research is field research that uses two theories, namely the
theory of hidden transcript and the theory of maslahah. The Hidden Transcript
theory was proposed by James C. Scott, while the maslahah theory was proposed
by Imam al-Ghazali. The research method used is qualitative with a legal sociology
approach. Data was collected through observations in Kalurahan Kepek
Kapanewon Wonosari, Gunungkidul Regency, interviews with couples married in
the month of Suro, and documentation. The analysis used a deductive approach,
starting by presenting universal theories or facts, and then concluding to explain the
cases in the field.
The results of this study conclude that there are two reasons why couples
marry in the month of Suro, namely due to parental obedience and educational
background. Couples who marry in the month of Suro are treated well by their
surroundings, without encountering ridicule, rejection, or other negative treatments.
This indicates that society is becoming more open and beginning to accept
marriages in the month of Suro as a legitimate choice and no longer strictly
associated with restrictive traditional beliefs. Using the perspective of Hidden
Transcript by James C. Scott, the actions of couples who continue to marry in a
month considered taboo can be understood as a form of symbolic resistance that is
not frontal. They do not openly oppose, but express their dissent through real
actions that reflect rationality, individual autonomy, and new interpretations of
religious teachings. This phenomenon emphasizes that social change often occurs
subtly through hidden practices, yet remains effective in dismantling the dominance
of old discourses that are no longer relevant to current societal conditions.
