"A culture is an ever-changing reality, its changes are difficult to avoid in the development\r\ntrajectory of a society. This change arises as an adaptive response (adaptation) or adjustment of\r\ntradition and culture itself to all social aspects that are interrelated and have their own functions.\r\nThese social aspects such as interaction patterns, communication patterns, community belief\r\nvalues, and knowledge which then give birth to a moral system that forms and maintains a culture.\r\nAs in the formation and maintenance of rituals that accompany the celebration of the nyewu\r\nceremony tradition in Javanese culture. Generally, the nyewu tradition as the closing of a series\r\nof ceremonies in accompanying someone's death, only contains rituals to pray for the safety of the\r\ndeceased. However, some Javanese community groups accompany the nyewu ceremony by\r\nreplacing the grave headstone and some are more unique, namely accompanying the demolition\r\nof the grave. Such as the demolition of graves carried out by the people of Padukuhan Sempu\r\nWonokerto Turi Sleman. In the procession of the demolition, several symbols were found that\r\ncontained the meaning of noble values in it. Over time, there have been many changes to the\r\nsymbols and procedures that continue to be carried out as a response to various social aspects\r\nthat exist in the community of Sempu Wonokerto Turi Sleman.\r\nThis research departs from the main question, namely how the background underlies the\r\ndemolition of the tomb, and what exactly is the use of the tradition of demolition of the tomb to the\r\npeople of Sempu hamlet. By using qualitative research method, data collection in this research\r\nwas obtained through direct observation and interview. The main data were obtained from people\r\nwho have directly participated in the tradition. The data were then studied through the lens of\r\nsociology of religion, especially using Brownislaw Malinowski's functional theory to find out how\r\nthe background of the tradition was created and how the tradition developed.\r\nThe results of this research show that there are many aspects that are interrelated,\r\nfunction, and have their respective roles in the dynamics that occur in the implementation of the\r\ntradition of tomb dismantling. For the people of Sempu Padukuhan, the tradition of grave\r\ndemolition is a means to fulfil their needs in the aspects of bodily comfort, metabolism, and\r\nsecurity. With the implementation of this tradition, the community becomes stronger to adapt to\r\nthe bitterness of life and uncertainty during life in the world and after death."^^ . "2025-06-04" . . . .
