Societal leaders and elites are referred to as al-mala’ because they possess and are endowed with everything deemed necessary and valuable. In the Qur’an, the term al-mala’ predominantly appears in Meccan verses and is often used in reference to the elites of past communities. This indicates a strong correlation between discussions of al-mala’ in the Qur’an and the historical context of prophethood in Mecca. Moreover, the majority of Qur’anic verses portray al-mala’ as an antagonistic group that opposed the prophetic message. They consistently sought to preserve the status quo and viewed the prophetic mission as a threat to their authority and societal structure. This study focuses on the group al-mala’ because societal transformation, progress, and development are often driven by the actions and influence of leaders and elites. This research falls under the category of library research and employs a philosophy of history approach. From the perspective of the philosophy of history, historical events do not occur linearly, but rather follow recurring patterns or cycles. The decline of civilizations, as depicted in the Qur’an, follows a similar pattern—namely, when the al-mala’ become solely focused on preserving existing power structures. The study aims to answer key questions concerning the characteristics of al-mala’ in the Qur’an, their roles and influence in the history of prophethood, and the Qur’anic response to al-mala’. In interpreting the narratives related to al-mala’, the author adopts the perspective of Muhammad Shahrur, who views these events as manifestations of structural conflict between two competing groups with differing interests. Furthermore, in analyzing the role and influence of al-mala’, the study utilizes critical discourse analysis, particularly in examining how al-mala’ exert control over dominant societal discourses. The findings of this study indicate the following: First, al-mala’ can be categorized into two groups: those who reject the prophetic mission and those who support it. The characteristics of the al-mala’ who reject the prophetic mission include disbelief (kufr), arrogance, indulgence in luxury, an excessive ambition for power, and fanaticism toward inherited traditions. Second, the role and influence of al-mala’ in controlling public discourse are evident in the various accusations they level against the prophets. These include labeling the prophets as liars, mere human beings, irrational individuals, arrogant, sorcerers, possessed by magic, madmen, or power seekers. These accusations were often legitimized by appeals to ancestral traditions. Such resistance and rejection of the prophetic message ultimately led to the downfall of their civilizations. Third, the Qur’anic response to al-mala’ takes the form of critical discourse targeting three main aspects: the arrogance or sense of superiority of the elites, the preservation of conservative power structures, and the perpetuation of unjust economic systems. These critiques are closely tied to the prophetic experience of Prophet Muhammad in Mecca and are aimed at establishing an ethical and just society date: 2025-06-11 date_type: published pages: 168 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: PASCASARJANA thesis_type: masters thesis_name: other citation: Yarsa Arnanda, S.Ag., NIM.: 22200012053 (2025) KARAKTERISTIK AL-MALA’ (ELIT) DALAM AL-QUR’AN: ANALISIS FILSAFAT SEJARAH TENTANG PERAN DAN PENGARUH AL-MALA’ DALAM SEJARAH KENABIAN.
