abstract: Road traffic and transportation play a very important role in facilitating
social mobility in society and are a driving force for national development. As
technological advances, especially transportation, increase, traffic violations can
increase which can cause accidents. Accident cases that occur from year to year
are increasing, especially in the jurisdiction of Sleman district. The high number of
accident cases involving children as victims, therefore requires legal protection for
children as victims of traffic accidents, as a form of effort to create order and
security on the highway. Based on this, an interesting problem to research is the
form of legal protection for children as victims of traffic accidents and the steps
taken by the Sleman Police to minimize the occurrence of injuries to children in
Sleman.
This research is field research, namely at the Sleman Police, libraries, laws
and regulations, and literature related to research with an empirical approach,
namely looking at something in the legal reality in society. This research is
descriptive-analytic in nature, namely providing a systematic description of the
problem. Analysis is carried out carefully and thoroughly to investigate how to
answer the problems posed, and then formulate solutions to these problems. This
research uses the theory of law enforcement and legal protection to analyze data
obtained from researchers
The results of this research explain that, firstly, the Sleman Police as a law
enforcement agency has carried out its duties, rights and authority and
responsibilities for its role based on the law which is in line with law enforcement
theory as a study in analyzing research. From an empirical perspective, the social
conditions of society which are still not aware of the importance of safety and
security on the road still give rise to concerns for children in traffic. Second, the
steps taken by the Sleman Police to minimize the occurrence of traffic accidents
involving children as victims with the programs implemented are by actively
implementing the role and order of driving, and socializing the issue of safety and
security of driving on the highway, from the elementary school level. (SD), Middle
School (SMP), High School (SMA). Child Friendly Police (PSA) carried out by the
South Kalimantan unit, this activity aims to introduce and educate traffic from an
early age, instilling the importance of safety and security for oneself and others.
