N2  - This study aims to analyze the interpersonal communication carried out by Bu Nyai
in shaping the leadership character of santri (female Islamic boarding school
students) at PPTQ Al-Hadi Komplek Al-Hamra? Yogyakarta. The background of
this research is based on the vital role of Bu Nyai as the main educator in a femaleonly
Islamic boarding school, as well as the need for santri leaders who are not
only intellectually competent but also possess strong moral and spiritual integrity.
This study formulates two main research questions: First, what is the pattern of Bu
Nyai?s interpersonal communication in shaping the leadership character of the
santri? Second, what is the impact of this interpersonal communication on the
development of character and leadership among the santri? This research uses a
qualitative approach with a case study method. The main theories employed for
analysis are Joseph A. DeVito's theory of interpersonal communication and
Stephen P. Robbins? theory of transformational leadership. Data collection
techniques include in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, which
were then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman.
The findings show that Bu Nyai?s interpersonal communication involves direct,
empathetic, and personal approaches, characterized by five key interpersonal
attitudes: openness, empathy, supportiveness, positivity, and equality. These
communication patterns are applied through daily mentoring activities, sermons,
individual guidance, and informal interactions that build emotional closeness
between Bu Nyai and the santri. The impact of this communication is the formation
of leadership character in the santri that reflects values such as integrity,
responsibility, discipline, and social awareness. Bu Nyai also demonstrates
transformational leadership traits by offering inspiration, personal attention,
intellectual stimulation, and strong influence on the santri.
Thus, this study concludes that Bu Nyai?s interpersonal communication plays a
significant role in shaping the leadership character of santri. Communication that
is intense, affectionate, and meaningful positions Bu Nyai as both a role model and
a transformative agent of character within the pesantren environment.
