Despite their widespread use, network implementations face challenges such as cost, scalability, security, and others. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is chosen because it separates the control plane and data plane, thereby providing flexibility, efficiency, and ease of network management. The design was implemented using a leaf-spine topology, leveraging the RYU Controller as the control centre and OpenvSwitch as the main switch. The implementation included installing supporting software, building the topology, configuring the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), and developing Python code for implementing the shortest path. Testing included Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as delay, throughput, and jitter. Results showed an average delay of 6.7–7.9 ms with a minimum variation of 2.6 ms and a maximum of >20 ms; throughput of 733–779 Mbps with low retransmission; and jitter of 0.006–0.008 ms and packet loss <0.01%. The evaluation revealed the necessity of RSTP to prevent looping and excessive CPU usage. The research findings indicate that SDN simulations using GNS3 can effectively represent modern network performance and have the potential to serve as a benchmark for further development. %K Software Defined Networking, GNS3, RYU Controller, OpenvSwitch, Quality of Service (QoS) %D 2025 %I UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA %L digilib72908
