These conditions indicate that social change has become an urgent necessity that cannot be ignored. In this context, intellectuals hold particular significance in promoting social transformation. However, they are also vulnerable to being co-opted as instruments of power legitimization, often confronted with dilemmas between maintaining the status quo or advancing social transformation, between serving elite interests or the interests of the people. This issue has become a central concern among social theorists regarding the independence and moral responsibility of intellectuals, with Mansour Fakih being one of the thinkers who devoted considerable attention to this matter. Through the critical perspective developed by Mansour Fakih, intellectuals are not only positioned as producers of knowledge but also as subjects actively engaged in dismantling structures of injustice and fostering social transformation. Therefore, this study broadly formulates two main research questions: first, how is the intellectual defined in Mansour Fakih’s thought? second, what is the role of intellectuals in the process of social transformation according to Mansour Fakih? The purpose of this study is to describe the concept of intellectuals from Mansour Fakih’s perspective and their role in advancing the process of social transformation. This research adopts a qualitative approach based on library research, examining Fakih’s major works as primary sources and various relevant literature as secondary references. The method employed is descriptive-analytical to examine Mansour Fakih’s thought. The findings of this study conclude that: first, the concept of intellectuals in Mansour Fakih’s thought represents a transformativeparticipatory model, namely intellectuals who are organically rooted in the social dynamics of society by integrating critical analytical capacity with direct involvement in the process of social transformation. Second, Fakih’s perspective on the role of intellectuals in social transformation portrays them as subjects with moral, political, and cultural responsibilities to actively engage in social struggles that side with the oppressed, grounded in the social realities of community life, and to advance social transformation through three strategic roles: a) building resistance movements and fostering the people’s critical consciousness; b) conducting participatory research involving direct engagement in the dynamics of social movements; and c) policy advocacy and the development of solidarity networks. date: 2025-08-21 date_type: published pages: 171 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS USHULUDDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM thesis_type: skripsi thesis_name: other citation: Riko Fardillah, NIM.: 18105010025 (2025) PERAN INTELEKTUAL DALAM TRANSFORMASI SOSIAL (ANALISIS ATAS PEMIKIRAN MANSOUR FAKIH).
