In verbal communication, the use of proper intonation is very important. When a speaker intends to convey information in the form of a declaration but uses the intonation typically used for questioning (interrogation), the listener may perceive that the speaker is asking a question. This can lead to misunderstandings between the speaker and the listener. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to intonation when communicating verbally. This study describes the intonation patterns in Zakir Naik's speech titled "The Legal Rights of Women in Islam" and how the intonation patterns contribute to the meaning of the speech, which will lead to an understanding of the speaker's intent (Zakir Naik). This research uses the main theory of Intonational Phonology by Robert Ladd and the supporting theory of speech act, specifically Speech Act classification by Searle. In this study, the researcher uses the PRAAT application to visualize audio into textual format for analysis. The finding of this study shows there are 45 sentences that have been identified by the researcher in this speech. In these 45 sentences Naik uses al the type of pitch accent, phrase accent and boundary tone. 41 sentences are assertive, and 4 sentences are directive. Based on the discussion, it can be concluded that the intonation patterns in the speech vary and contribute to its meaning and its illocutionary speech act. date: 2024-07-10 date_type: published pages: 104 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS ADAB DAN ILMU BUDAYA thesis_type: skripsi thesis_name: other citation: Sukmawati, NIM.: 20101050010 (2024) INTONATIONAL PATTERNS IN ZAKIR NAIK’S SPEECH ENTITLED “THE LEGAL RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN ISLAM”: AN INTONATIONAL PHONOLOGY PERSPECTIVE.
