N2  - This research aims to examine the progress of the Serdang Sultanate in the
social, cultural and political fields from 1946 to 2023. This research has three main
problems, namely: (1) the influence of the Serdang Sultanate in the social, cultural
and political fields from 1946-2023; (2) the form of Serdang Sultanate's actions in
the social, cultural and political fields from 1946-2023; (3) the impact of the
Sultanate's actions in the social, cultural and political fields from 1946-2023. In
addition, this research also aims to see how the existence of the Serdang Sultanate
in Deli Serdang in introducing Malay cultural customs and integrating itself into
the government of the Republic of Indonesia. The Serdang Sultanate, which has a
long history in the royal order in North Sumatra, Indonesia, has contributed
significantly to the development of the local community, both during the sultanate
period and afterwards.
This research uses qualitative methods with historical and sociological
approaches, involving document analysis, interviews with descendants of the
Serdang Sultanate, and field observations. This research uses role theory and the
concepts used in this research are: sociology and anthropology. In this study
researchers used the theory of role, social action, and Islamic anthropology. This
research uses a historical research method with four stages, namely: heuristics,
source verification, interpretation, and historiography. There are two sources of data
used in this study: primary and secondary sources. The primary sources used
include Oostkust van Sumatra, photos and personal archives of the Serdang
Sultanate, KITLV, the legal deed of establishment of the Serdang Sultanate
Foundation, and contemporaneous newspapers such as: Pewarta Deli.
The results show that the descendants of the Serdang Sultanate play an
important role in the preservation of local culture through various activities such as
cultural festivals, the establishment of educational institutions, and the organization
of traditional events. In the social sphere, they are actively involved in various
social community activities, including community empowerment and humanitarian
assistance. In the political sphere, some descendants of the Serdang Sultanate have
achieved strategic positions in local and national government, showing that the
sultanate's legacy still has a strong influence in Indonesia's political dynamics. This
research concludes that the heirs of the Serdang Sultanate have an ongoing
contribution in maintaining cultural identity as well as adapting to social and
political changes, demonstrating their relevance in the modern context.
