"Initially, the Tiban tradition was practiced by the community of Wajak Kidul\r\nVillage, Boyolangu District, Tulungagung Regency, as a ritual to request rain during\r\nthe dry season. The Tiban ritual involves players whipping each other with a whip\r\nduring the event. The drops of blood and whip marks symbolize the players'\r\nsacrifice, with the hope that rain will soon fall and ending the dry season. However,\r\nstarting in the 1970s, the Tiban tradition in Wajak Kidul Village underwent various\r\naspects changes, ranging from its presentation to its function. Tiban tradition that\r\nwas once a ritual for rainmaking transformed into a performance that serves only\r\nas entertainment for the community. The changes in the Tiban tradition are\r\nintriguing and worth further study. This research aims to explain the changes in the\r\nTiban tradition in Wajak Kidul Village. The main issues addressed in this research\r\nare the forms of change in the Tiban tradition and the reasons behind these changes.\r\nTo explore these issues, this research uses a cultural anthropology approach,\r\nreferring to the commodification theory by Vincent Mosco. The research method\r\nemployed is historical research with four stages: heuristics, verification,\r\ninterpretation, and historiography. Data collection techniques include interviews,\r\nobservation, and literature studies. The analysis process utilizes primary and\r\nsecondary sources, as well as other supporting materials. The findings of this study\r\nindicate that several changes have occurred in the Tiban tradition, including\r\nchanges in its presentation and function. Initially, the Tiban tradition was used by\r\nthe community of Wajak Kidul Village as a rainmaking ritual. However, after\r\nundergoing changes, it is now only used as a form of entertainment held during\r\ncertain events. The organization of the Tiban tradition in various activities is one\r\nway to preserve it and prevent it from disappearing. The factors behind these\r\nchanges include religion or belief, culture, community mindset, and economy. The\r\nimpact of these changes includes strengthening social relationships, becoming a\r\nsource of income, reflecting the dynamic nature of culture, and ensuring the\r\npreservation of the Tiban tradition."^^ .
