The Tiban ritual involves players whipping each other with a whip during the event. The drops of blood and whip marks symbolize the players' sacrifice, with the hope that rain will soon fall and ending the dry season. However, starting in the 1970s, the Tiban tradition in Wajak Kidul Village underwent various aspects changes, ranging from its presentation to its function. Tiban tradition that was once a ritual for rainmaking transformed into a performance that serves only as entertainment for the community. The changes in the Tiban tradition are intriguing and worth further study. This research aims to explain the changes in the Tiban tradition in Wajak Kidul Village. The main issues addressed in this research are the forms of change in the Tiban tradition and the reasons behind these changes. To explore these issues, this research uses a cultural anthropology approach, referring to the commodification theory by Vincent Mosco. The research method employed is historical research with four stages: heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. Data collection techniques include interviews, observation, and literature studies. The analysis process utilizes primary and secondary sources, as well as other supporting materials. The findings of this study indicate that several changes have occurred in the Tiban tradition, including changes in its presentation and function. Initially, the Tiban tradition was used by the community of Wajak Kidul Village as a rainmaking ritual. However, after undergoing changes, it is now only used as a form of entertainment held during certain events. The organization of the Tiban tradition in various activities is one way to preserve it and prevent it from disappearing. The factors behind these changes include religion or belief, culture, community mindset, and economy. The impact of these changes includes strengthening social relationships, becoming a source of income, reflecting the dynamic nature of culture, and ensuring the preservation of the Tiban tradition.
