AI not only accelerates access to information and supports the writing of academic works but also raises new challenges related to critical thinking skills and academic integrity. AI can function like a double edged sword on one hand, improving efficiency and the quality of learning, but on the other hand, improper use may reduce students’ independence and critical thinking abilities. Therefore, research on AI use is important to better understand its benefits, risks, and applications, particularly ChatGPT, so that appropriate competency development strategies can be formulated for students. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with source and method triangulation, using purposive sampling to select participants. The informants consisted of four active students at different educational levels (semester 4, semester 8, and a Master’s student) as well as expert judgment from the Head of the Psychology Department. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, anecdotal observations, and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model (data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing). The findings show that students’ motivation to use AI can be understood through the framework of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), encompassing autonomy, competence, and relatedness, along with two additional aspects: ethics-responsibility and future expectations. Students perceived AI as useful for improving learning efficiency and comprehension but stressed the importance of cautious use to avoid undermining critical thinking skills. The Head of Department emphasized that AI should serve as a research aid, with control over ideas and analysis remaining with the students.
