abstract: The phenomenon of toxic friendship is common among university students, including female students at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. These relationships are often characterized by destructive criticism, gossip, stubbornness, excessive dependence, and lack of empathy. Despite experiencing negative effects, many students remain trapped in such friendships, unable to detach themselves due to emotional ties and social pressures. This study aims to analyze how verbal and nonverbal communication functions in maintaining relationships within toxic friendship dynamics. A descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach was employed, involving six female students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings reveal that verbal communication appears in the form of small talk, jokes, and satirical criticism, while nonverbal communication is reflected in facial expressions, gestures, and mediated interactions on social media. Relationship maintenance strategies include joint activities, mediated communication, and avoidance, often intertwined with antisocial behavior. However, instead of repairing the relationship, these strategies tend to sustain the toxic cycle, making individuals feel obliged to continue the bond. Emotional attachment, academic interdependence, and the influence of collectivist culture further reinforce the sense of entrapment, leaving students caught between the need for belonging and the discomfort of an unhealthy relationship.This study highlights the paradoxical role of communication: it not only preserves closeness but also perpetuates destructive patterns that keep students entangled in toxic friendships.
