abstract: With the increasing number of music concerts held in Yogyakarta, the creation of safe spaces has become an issue that needs to be addressed in order to build a more gender-sensitive music ecosystem. This study aims to analyze how The Kick, as a band, campaigns for safe spaces for women in music concerts, particularly within the independent music scene in Yogyakarta. The research employs Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory and the sociology of music as analytical approaches, examining the dynamics between the prevailing social structures in music concerts and the agency of musicians in fostering gender-inclusive social transformation.
This study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, social media documentation, and literature review. The analysis draws upon the concepts of sociology of music and Giddens’ structuration theory as the main references to understand how The Kick intervenes in the existing structures and attempts to transform the concert environment into a gender-friendly space.
The findings reveal that The Kick utilizes its cultural capital as a symbolic actor within the music community to produce new values through reflective and collaborative actions. The band has successfully driven a shift in normative structures within concerts—from entertainment spaces that tend to be permissive toward sexual violence to performance spaces that are more ethical, gender-aware, and participatory. In this context, music functions as a grassroots medium for cultural transformation. The study concludes that structural transformation can be achieved through consistent cultural practices supported by a responsive and engaged community.
