description: This study aims to reveal the efforts of traditional pesantren  communities in Java in maintaining the Javanese-Arabic script (Pegon)  by analyzing the role and function of the Pegon script in several  traditional pesantren communities in Java, analyzing the patterns of  traditional pesantren communities in Java in maintaining the Pegon  script, and analyzing the motivations and causes behind it, using the  sociolinguistic approach. The researcher took data samples from nine  traditional pesantren communities in Central and East Java, namely: in  PP Roudhotut Tholibin Rembang, PP Roudhotut Thullab Magelang, PP  Al Balagh Tuban with all three publishers: PT Al Balagh Al Mishbah  and Majlis Ta'lif wal Khattath, PP Fathul Ulum Kediri, PT Menara  Kudus, PT Toha Putra Semarang, PC LP Al Ma'arif NU Jepara,  Community of Kiai Sholeh Darat Lovers "KOPISODA" Semarang and  Rifa'iyyah Community Semarang. The results of this study show that  Pegon script in the traditional Javanese pesantren community has  several functions, among others: First, it became the identity of the  traditional pesantren community in Java. Second, it became a symbol of  resistance to colonizers in the early 20th century and a symbol of  resistance to transnational Islamic movements in the 21st century. Third,  it became a medium of scientific transmission in the traditional Javanese  pesantren community. Fourth, it became a method of translating  classical Arabic texts. Fifth, it became one of the entry points for Arabic  vocabulary in Javanese. Sixth, to preserve the religious traditions of  Java. Seventh, to preserve the ancient Javanese language. The patterns  of preserving the Pegon script in traditional pesantren communities in  Java are as follows: First, producing and disseminating Pegon texts.  Second, studying classical Turats using the Pegon translation method of  interpretation. Third, making Pegon texts as teaching materials. Fourth,  motivating others to write using Pegon script. The motivations of the  traditional pesantren community in maintaining Pegon include:  educational and da'wah motivation, tabarruk with atsar Shalihin,  fulfilling community requests, tabarruk with Qur'an letters, preserving  Pegon script and economic motivation.
