Vita Fitria, S.Ag., M.Ag. abstract: Social changes in modern society have encouraged many wives to participate in economic activities, although traditionally the responsibility of earning a living is assigned to the husband. This phenomenon raises questions about the boundaries of working wives according to Islamic law. Although there is no explicit prohibition in the nash shari‘i, Islam establishes certain values and principles that must be upheld. Therefore, an in-depth study of the boundaries of working wives using the approaches of Maslahah and Saddu Az-Zariah is necessary. The main focus of this study is to analyze these boundaries from the perspectives of Maslahah and Saddu Az-Zariah, and to examine their alignment with the principles of gender equality. The issues discussed include two aspects: first, the limitations of wives working according to the concepts of Maslahah and Saddu Az-Zariah; and second, how gender equality analysis influences the understanding of these limitations. This research employs a library-based qualitative method with a normative approach combining ushul fiqh and gender studies. The analysis is carried out through descriptive-analytical and critical examinations of classical and contemporary literature, focusing on the interpretation of Maslahah and Saddu Az-Zariah in the context of wives earning a living. Data are analyzed qualitatively through interpretation and critical review from both perspectives, and further examined using gender equality theory. The findings reveal that, first, restrictions on wives working from the perspective of Maslahah aim to maintain balance between domestic roles and economic contributions, as well as to protect the five essential principles of Islamic law (ad-daruriyyat al-khams). This concept does not reject women’s participation in work but emphasizes the importance of staying within the boundaries of the sharia. Meanwhile, Saddu Az-Zariah in the context of working wives seeks to prevent potential harm within the household, such as disruption of domestic duties, the rise of temptation (fitnah), and violations of sharia norms. This approach is not absolutely prohibitive but rather preventive, emphasizing prudence to ensure that wives’ economic activities remain within the framework of Islamic law. Second, from the perspective of gender equality, the interpretation of these two concepts needs to be contextualized within modern society to ensure fairness, reduce bias, and accommodate women’s active participation in public life without neglecting moral values and family responsibilities. date: 2025-07-02 date_type: published pages: 130 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS SYARI’AH DAN HUKUM thesis_type: skripsi thesis_name: other citation: Muhammad Rifki Ichfauzan Pohan, NIM.: 20103060030 (2025) BATASAN-BATASAN SEORANG ISTRI YANG MENCARI NAFKAH (STUDI MASLAHAH DAN SADDU AZ-ZARIAH).
