abstract: Left terminology has ambiguous meanings if not placed in the right context, for example, Left meaning atheist, rebel, and so on. In addition to having negative meanings, Left can also have a positive image that is often associated with liberation movements. The positive image of Left terminology is used by Hassan Hanafi and Abdul Munir Mulkhan in their ideas in the field of Islamic Theology. Although both use Left terminology as a form of defense for oppressed communities, there are differences in their main ideas. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the similarities and differences between Hassan Hanafi and Abdul Munir Mulkhan’s views on Left Theology.
This research uses a qualitative method, with descriptive-comparative analysis. The data collected in this research is through a literature study taken from sources namely Dari Aqidah ke Revolusi (From Aqidah to Revolution), Oksidentalisme Sikap Kita Terhadap Tradisi Barat (Occidentalism: Our Attitude Towards Western Tradition), and Dialog Agama dan Revolusi (Religious Dialogue and Revolution) by Hassan Hanafi, and Left Theology: From Individual Theology to Social Theology by Abdul Munir Mulkhan. Other data came from books, journal articles, and theses related to these two figures.
The results of the study show that both of them fight for the rights of oppressed, poor, and underprivileged communities. However, there are differences in their main ideas due to differing views on the problems faced by Muslims. Hassan Hanafi states that Muslims are facing internal and external problems, while Abdul Munir Mulkhan states the opposite, namely that the problems faced actually come from Muslims themselves. Further research is recommended using other figures who embody ideas of intellectual renewal that are capable of responding to challenges, or it can also focus on the ideas of Abdul Munir Mulkhan as the formal and material objects using the latest issues occurring in Indonesia.
