%X The use of humour in preaching can sometimes backfire on preachers if the
humour is not appropriate to the context of the sermon, leading to controversy.
Gus Miftah is a preacher who is famous for his firm, straightforward and
humorous style of preaching, which is often controversial. This study aims to
analyse the construction of humour in the controversy surrounding Gus Miftah's
preaching.
This study uses a qualitative method with Klaus Krippendrof's content
analysis approach, Martin's humour style theory, and Aang Ridwan's theory of
humour and humour style in preaching as analytical tools. The results of the study
found that Gus Miftah uses a polar style of humour, namely affiliative humour
(friendly) and aggressive humour (attacking). In creating humour, Gus Miftah
tends to combine two or even three theories to create humour in his preaching.
Meanwhile, the humour style in preaching found that, in general, Gus Miftah's
humour style meets ethical standards (educational, critical, non-racist and nonpornographic)
and aesthetic standards (recreational, innovative, applicable and
proportional), while some of it does not meet ethical and aesthetic standards even
though it makes the congregation laugh but is not in accordance with the context
of preaching. This is one of the causes of controversy in his preaching. This
emphasises that humour must first meet ethical standards before it can produce
aesthetic value.
