Fuad Mustafid, M.Ag. abstract: The Merti Dusun tradition is one of the cultural heritages preserved by the community of Ndari Hamlet, Pakem, Sleman, as an expression of gratitude for the blessings of harvest and the preservation of the village’s safety. This tradition includes various activities such as communal feasts (kenduri), flower scattering, incense burning, and the use of special costumes. However, in practice, several issues arise: some aspects of the tradition are considered to contain cultural and social values, while others are suspected of involving animistic practices or beliefs that contradict Islamic creed. This has led to differing views among religious leaders. This study aims to examine the perspectives and arguments of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah leaders in Pakem District regarding the Merti Dusun tradition in Ndari Hamlet. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical-comparative character. The type of research is field research with a normative-empirical approach, using the theory of ‘urf as the analytical framework. The data consist of primary data, obtained through direct observation of the Merti Dusun practices and in-depth interviews with NU and Muhammadiyah leaders in Pakem District, and secondary data, gathered from literature such as books, journals, scholarly articles, and relevant documents. Data collection techniques included observation and interviews, while the analysis employed a descriptive-comparative method, namely describing field findings, comparing the perspectives of NU and Muhammadiyah leaders, and subsequently analyzing them within the framework of ‘urf theory. The findings show that NU leaders acknowledge that the Merti Dusun tradition contains practices in line with Islamic teachings, such as gratitude, togetherness, and social solidarity, while also recognizing the presence of elements that are erroneous and inconsistent with Islamic creed, which therefore must be abandoned. Muhammadiyah leaders expressed a similar view but more firmly rejected practices containing shirk or tasyabbuh, while likewise acknowledging the positive aspects that may be preserved. Thus, despite differences in emphasis, both NU and Muhammadiyah leaders affirm that the Merti Dusun tradition encompasses elements that are correct and beneficial to be maintained, as well as elements that are mistaken and must be corrected in accordance with Islamic guidance. date: 2025-10-17 date_type: published pages: 128 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS SYARI’AH DAN HUKUM thesis_type: skripsi thesis_name: other citation: Oktavia Puspita Rahma, NIM.: 19103060056 (2025) TRADISI MERTI DUSUN DI NDARI, PAKEM: STUDI PERBANDINGAN PANDANGAN TOKOH NU DAN MUHAMMADIYAH PAKEM.
