One effort to address this issue is to use flashcards, which provide students with opportunities to think independently, discuss, and actively share their understanding. The purpose of this study is: First, to determine the implementation of Flashcard learning media in improving learning independence and understanding of material on ethnic and cultural diversity. Second, to determine the effectiveness of using Flashcard learning media in improving student learning independence. Third, to determine the effectiveness of using flashcard learning media in improving students' understanding of the material. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental research type and a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The study population was all 51 fourth-grade students of MI Ma'arif Bego Yogyakarta, divided into an experimental group (grade IV A) and a control group (grade IV B). The sampling technique used was cluster sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire instrument to measure learning independence and a test to measure material understanding, which had been tested for validity and reliability. The data analysis technique used was the Independent Sample T-Test (T-Test) for normally distributed data and the Mann- Whitney U-Test as an alternative if the data was not normal. The research results show the use of flashcard learning media is proven to be effective in improving students' learning independence and understanding of the material. This is evidenced by the results of the comparative test (T-Test and Mann- Whitney U-Test) on the variables of learning independence and understanding of the material which show a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. Furthermore, the results of the N-Gain calculation on the learning independence variable in the experimental group reached 0.6327, which is in the medium-high category. Meanwhile, for the material understanding variable, the results of the N-Gain calculation show a value of 0.3015, which is in the medium category.} }
