"Pesantren, as traditional Islamic educational institutions, have long\r\nbeen deeply rooted in Indonesian society, particularly in Java. These\r\ninstitutions are often portrayed as reproducing patriarchal values, with\r\nfemale figures in the pesantren world rarely appearing in scholarly\r\naccounts. However, this absence in academic narratives does not\r\nnecessarily indicate that pesantren women lack meaningful roles. Several\r\nscholars argue that such oversight stems from the use of analytical\r\nframeworks that fail to adequately capture women’s agency within the\r\npesantren context.\r\nThis study examines Jam’iyyah Perempuan Pengasuh Pesantren\r\ndan Muballighoh (JP3M), a community specifically established as a\r\nplatform for pesantren women. It explores how female religious authority\r\nis constructed within JP3M by analyzing the interplay between agency,\r\ncommunity, and collective identity, and how these dimensions shape\r\nwomen’s strategic positions in Indonesia’s Islamic landscape. Using a\r\nqualitative approach and drawing on theoretical frameworks of collective\r\nidentity, community-based authority, and women’s agency, the study\r\ndemonstrates that nyai (female pesantren leaders) are not confined to\r\ndomestic roles but emerge as key religious actors who establish, sustain,\r\nand negotiate their authority through cultural and spiritual resources.\r\nPesantren women’s agency within JP3M operates through symbolic\r\nstrategies grounded in maternal values (ibuism), spirituality, and control of\r\nthe domestic sphere, which are transformed into religious capital enabling\r\naccess to the public domain. Practices such as mujāhadah, sima’an al-\r\nQur’an, classical Islamic text study (pengajian kitab kuning), and the\r\nmanagement of educational institutions illustrate how nyai have redefined\r\ntheir religious roles while remaining rooted in pesantren cultural norms.\r\nThis agency is productive rather than reactive: pesantren women build\r\npower through cultural adaptation that resonates with traditionalist\r\ncommunities.\r\nCommunity functions as a social infrastructure that legitimizes and\r\ndistributes authority. As a Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)-based cultural\r\nassociation, JP3M is not merely a forum for networking but a symbolic\r\narena where women’s authority is constructed, consolidated, and\r\ntransmitted. Activities such as bahtsul masā’il (collective religious\r\ndeliberation), da‘wah training, economic empowerment initiatives, and\r\ninter-pesantren collaborations expand women’s influence without directly\r\nconfronting patriarchal structures. The collective identity of pesantren women in JP3M is dynamic\r\nrather than homogenous. The identities of nyai or ning signify not only\r\ngenealogical ties to pesantren but also embody moral, spiritual, and\r\ncultural authority. Public recognition of nyai as custodians of traditional\r\nIslamic values provides symbolic legitimacy for their acceptance as\r\nreligious authorities, distinguishing them from other Muslim women’s\r\norganizations such as Muslimat NU.\r\nCollective representation within JP3M emerges through the\r\nintersection of domestic and public spheres. Domestic positioning is not\r\ninterpreted as subordination but as a strategic resource for negotiating\r\nauthority in broader arenas. In this context, ibuism is not merely a\r\nconservative ideology but a consciously employed discursive tool through\r\nwhich nyai extend their authority across religious, educational, and\r\neconomic domains. This strategy exemplifies a form of “everyday\r\npolitics” characteristic of pesantren Islam.\r\nIn conclusion, this study shows that the women’s movement within\r\nJP3M represents a complex form of religio-cultural agency that integrates\r\nspirituality, community-based leadership, and collective identity as central\r\ninstruments of authority formation. Far from being peripheral within\r\nIslamic scholarly structures, pesantren women emerge as knowledge\r\nproducers, agents of social change, and custodians of tradition who\r\nactively transform religious spaces through culturally resonant pathways."^^ .
