This tradition is practiced through the distribution of food to neighbors, relatives, and community leaders as a means of conveying information and showing respect for a marriage event. This study aims to address two research questions: (1) how the people of Kanigoro Village perceive the punjungan tradition within the series of marriage practices, and (2) how the punjungan tradition is related to the role of marriage witnesses in the marital practices of the Kanigoro community.. This research is a field study employing an empirical approach with a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through interviews with religious leaders, community leaders, village officials, and community members directly involved in the practice of punjungan, supported by observation and documentation. The analysis applies Talcott Parsons’ structural-functional theory (AGIL) to examine the social functions of punjungan within the community system, alongside the concept of ‘urf in Islamic law to assess the legitimacy and position of the tradition in relation to Islamic legal principles. The findings of this study indicate that, first, the Kanigoro community continues to maintain the practice of punjungan through the distribution of food to respected figures and surrounding community members, and perceives this tradition as a social mechanism for conveying and affirming the existence of a marriage within the community. Second, at the local level, punjungan is not understood as part of the essential pillars of marriage, but rather as a social practice that extends the function of marriage announcement. In practice, punjungan complements the role of marriage witnesses by fostering broader social knowledge and recognition, thereby ensuring that the marriage does not take place in secrecy. Third, the tradition of punjungan can be categorized as ‘urf ṣaḥīḥ, as it aligns with the objectives of Islamic law in maintaining transparency, social order, and clarity of marital status, provided that it is carried out within reasonable limits and does not result in harm. Consistent with its conformity to ‘urf, the tradition of punjungan functions as an extension of marital testimony within the social sphere, operating in a complementary manner to the formal legal testimony of the marriage contract in the context of Islamic family law. date: 2025-12-15 date_type: published pages: 124 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS SYARI’AH DAN HUKUM thesis_type: masters thesis_name: other citation: Rizka Rahmawati Muharram, S.H., NIM.: 23203011206 (2025) TRADISI PUNJUNGAN WALIMATUL ‘URS SEBAGAI PERLUASAN KESAKSIAN PERNIKAHAN (STUDI KASUS DI KELURAHAN KANIGORO KECAMATAN SAPTOSARI KABUPATEN GUNUNGKIDUL).
