This study attempts to uncover the role and struggle of the kiai by examining the influence and leadership patterns of the kiai and the impact on the lives of the people in Kudus. The changes in question cover various fields, both social, cultural, economic, and political. In addition to contributing to Islamic boarding schools, kiai in Kudus also contribute to madrasahs so that it can be concluded that their greatest role and influence are from the educational path. Systematically, the influence on the wider community due to the role of the kiai is driven by the network of scientific genealogy and kinship genealogy through marriage. The main problem in this study is the social change of Kudus society. To analyze the problem in this study using a sociological approach with reference to the concept of change, religion and social as explained by Taufik Abdullah. The collection of sources or data in this study uses interview techniques with literature studies. While in the analysis using historical analysis techniques through events that occur. This research uses historical methods which include heuristics. Verification, interpretation and historiography. The research results show that Kiai in Kudus have a high social position and can be said to be patrons. As patrons, kiai in Kudus succeeded in reforming Kudus society, including in various fields. In general, kiai only play a role as religious teachers and a place for consultation regarding community religious issues, but this is different in Kudus. In the political field, kiai can be a reference for the public in determining the direction of their choice in voting. In religious matters, the kiai is clearly the reference center. In the field of education, kiai in Kudus not only act as kiai but can also develop madrasas as places of da'wah. In the socio-cultural field, kiai in Kudus are able to uphold the teachings of Sunan Kudus in the form of the Gusjigang Philosophy and other cultures.
