abstract: The Langghar in the Taneyan Lanjhang tradition holds an important position as a family prayer space and a center for religious cultivation passed down through generations. However, the evolving social dynamics in Gunggung Village indicate a shift in how the community utilizes and interprets the presence of the Langghar. Changes in lifestyle, increasing educational and economic mobility, as well as the emergence of more formal learning institutions have collectively shaped a new direction for the function of this religious space in daily life.
This study aims to trace how changes to the Langghar have taken place in Taneyan Lanjhang and how this functional shift has affected the surrounding community’s social life. To achieve this, the research employs a qualitative field approach through in-depth interviews, phased observations conducted over eight months, and the collection of village documents that describe long-term socio-economic conditions. This combination of methods enables the researcher to understand the process of change comprehensively and capture residents’ experiences and perspectives regarding the transformation they have undergone.
The findings reveal that the Langghar in Taneyan Lanjhang, Gunggung Village, has undergone a transformation in both its physical form and its functions. Physically, improvements to the building occurred alongside the community’s growing economic capacity, resulting in a Langghar that was once simple becoming more permanent and representative. Functionally, the Langghar has evolved beyond being merely a space for worship and Qur’an learning; it has developed into a center for social activities such as the celebration of maulid, wedding rituals, and family or community deliberation forums. This transformation has produced significant social impacts, including changes in patterns of social interaction from those previously centered on family-based religious activities to more open and communal forms and a shift in religious education from a traditional Langghar-based model toward an institutional format through the establishment of the Madrasah Diniyah (Madin). The presence of Madin represents a new form of institutionalization that restructures religious learning processes and expands educational access for children. These changes also influence community cohesion, where social solidarity is no longer built solely through family religious rituals but through more organized activities oriented toward the needs of modern society.
