N2  - M. Dawam Rahardjo has emerged as a prominent figure in Indonesian Quranic studies, known for his distinctive works of interpretation (Tafsir). The uniqueness of his writings serves as a magnet for researchers and academics, making his contributions impossible to overlook. Given his non-linear academic background regarding formal Quranic studies, Rahardjo?s work departs from conventional interpretative frameworks. His vast erudition ensures that his interpretations are rich and dynamic, incorporating a wide array of materials and references from his diverse intellectual repertoire. Addressing the complexities within Rahardjo?s work, this study aims to explore his interpretative process in relation to the historical context surrounding the production of his Tafsir.
To achieve this objective, this research employs the hermeneutical theory proposed by Hans-Georg Gadamer. This theory helps reveal an interpretative process that is inextricably linked to the interpreter's historical influence. The stage of historical consciousness (effective history) within the context of the mufassir (interpreter) is intertwined with the understanding manifested in his reading of the Quranic text. This situation is shaped by conditions, personal experiences, locality, and similar factors, compelling the interpreter to recognize that all knowledge or interpretation plays a role within history.
The findings indicate that the interpretations presented by Rahardjo tend to offer a broad perspective. This breadth of vision is directly related to the intellectual inclinations inherent in the author. His mastery of various disciplines, combined with the extensive access available to him as an academic, contributes to the variety found in his interpretative results. The use of various non-exegetical literatures serves as a form of material enrichment, reflecting an effort to integrate knowledge that transcends a single specialized field. Consequently, the interpretative narrative he presents is not confined to a single discipline but actively addresses social issues.
