Ag., M.Ag., M.A., Ph.D. abstract: This thesis discusses the practice of suwuk healing with a case study of KH Abdul Khalim in Gunung Kidul. The practice of suwuk healing is a form of traditional healing that is still popular and developing in the Javanese Islamic community. The practice of suwuk healing is not only understood as an alternative healing method, but also as a process of transcendental communication involving symbolic relationships between humans, God and religious values. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse and assess suwuk healing practices as a form of transcendental communication, focusing on Islamic symbols, the communication process, and the role of healers in building patients' beliefs and healing experiences. The main questions in this study are: what form does transcendental communication take in KH Abdul Khalim's suwuk healing practice? and how can the transcendental communication in KH Abdul Khalim's suwuk practice be used in patient healing practices? To answer these questions, this study conducted field observations and direct interviews with healers. In addition, this study conducted additional searches for other data such as books and journals. Then, in analysing the data, this study used symbolic interactionism theory, Max Weber's social action theory, and Harold Lasswell's communication model to understand the communication process, meaning construction, and communication effects in suwuk practices. The results of this study indicate that the practice of suwuk healing is a structured and meaningful form of transcendental communication, manifested through the use of prayers, verses from the Qur'an, and plain water as religious symbols. KH Abdul Khalim acts as a spiritual mediator who facilitates the healing process. Furthermore, the authority and legitimacy of the healer are important in strengthening the patient's belief, inner peace and hope for healing. date: 2026-01-09 date_type: published pages: 111 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: PASCASARJANA thesis_type: masters thesis_name: other citation: Agus Firmansyah, NIM.: 23200011001 (2026) PRAKTIK PENYEMBUHAN SUWUK DALAM MASYARAKAT JAWA ISLAM DI YOGYAKARTA: STUDI KASUS KH ABDUL KHALIM.
