"Twenty-first-century learning requires university students to be active and\r\nparticipatory learners; therefore, the heutagogical approach (self-determined\r\nlearning) is considered necessary to be implemented. This study aims to: (1)\r\nanalyze the practices of Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam,\r\nPAI) as experienced by students; (2) examine Islamic Religious Education\r\npractices implemented by lecturers using a heutagogical approach; (3) analyze\r\nthe outcomes of Islamic Religious Education practices incorporating\r\nheutagogical elements; and (4) formulate new heutagogical elements within\r\nState Islamic Higher Education Institutions (Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan\r\nIslam Negeri, PTKIN).\r\nThis study employs a qualitative approach with a case study method to\r\nintensively investigate the practice of Islamic Religious Education using a\r\nheutagogical approach at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang, UIN Salatiga, and UIN\r\nSultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. Participants were purposively selected\r\nfrom program administrators, lecturers, and students of Islamic Religious\r\nEducation. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and\r\ndocumentation, and were analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data\r\ncollection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification.\r\nData validity was ensured through triangulation of sources, methods, and theories.\r\nThe findings of this study reveal several key insights. First, the empirical\r\nimplementation of heutagogy across the three research sites demonstrates a shift\r\nfrom structured learning toward more self-directed learning through changes in task\r\ndesign, interaction patterns, and classroom assessment mechanisms. Second,\r\nheutagogical educational practices unfold across three main stages: an initial stage\r\ncharacterized by experiential learning and student autonomy; a transitional stage\r\nmarked by learning independence, project management, and peer feedback\r\npractices; and an advanced heutagogical stage characterized by the emergence of\r\npsychological safety, self-efficacy, and relational autonomy. Third, the activation\r\nof heutagogical elements by lecturers is proven to stimulate holistic transformation\r\nacross students’ cognitive, affective, and moral dimensions. Fourth, this study\r\nconstructs a new heutagogical element for the development of Islamic Religious\r\nEducation in PTKIN, namely, moral feeling. This element functions as a\r\nmechanism of self-regulation that integrates conscience, rationality, and action,\r\nensuring that educational practice not only develops academic capability but also\r\nfosters moral integrity. Furthermore, this element reinforces the distinctive identity\r\nof PTKIN as institutions that integrate the tradition of Islamic moral education\r\n(tarbiyah Islamiyah) with contemporary self-directed learning paradigms."^^ .
