"Anxiety is a symptom of fear of something that poses a threat. At a normal\r\nlevel, anxiety is a normal defense mechanism possessed by humans. However, when\r\nanxiety reaches a negative level, namely when it interferes with daily activities, it\r\nneeds to be given proportional attention. If this condition is not properly regulated, it\r\nwill lead to chronic consequences such as depression. Based on this phenomenon, this\r\nthesis explores the process of art as therapy to overcome anxiety, focusing on\r\nstudents in Yogyakarta. Four informants were gathered from three educational\r\ninstitutions: the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta State University, and\r\nSunan Kalijaga State Islamic University. This thesis formulates the stages of art as\r\ntherapy that can be applied independently to help students regulate their emotions.\r\nThe approach used is qualitative with a descriptive-analytical method to explore in\r\ndepth the data collected through observation and interviews with informants or\r\nresearch subjects. Primary data was obtained through observation of the research\r\nsubjects, both before and during the art therapy process. In addition, interviews were\r\nalso used to understand the emotional responses and changes felt during the therapy\r\nprocess. Library research was used to examine literature relevant to art therapy theory\r\nand previous research results.\r\nA number of studies have implemented art therapy procedures, but few have\r\nused art as therapy. Although the two are interconnected and inseparable, art therapy\r\nand art as therapy have slight differences in their stages. The similarity between the\r\ntwo lies in the therapeutic effects they produce. Judith Aron Rubin's theory, art\r\ntherapy, and Edward Burke Feldman's art criticism will serve as guides and thinking\r\npartners for analyzing the creative process and its results. Quoting the stages of art\r\ntherapy developed by Rubin, which have been elaborated and explored in various\r\nliterature, this study will compile concrete stages to determine the procedures for art\r\nas therapy that are applicable. These stages serve as a starting point for further\r\nobservation of several students in Yogyakarta who are experiencing anxiety. The\r\nresults of this study show that art activities as therapy conducted in two different\r\nsessions, namely private sessions and group sessions with the Ngudaroso community,\r\ncan be a medium of sublimation to overcome anxiety among students. For example,\r\nStudent Y, who initially felt fear about the future and often found it difficult to carry\r\nout daily activities, felt more relaxed and was able to refocus on his current\r\nresponsibilities after participating in art therapy sessions. In addition, the results of\r\nthe artistic process as therapy will be analyzed using Edward Burke Feldman's art\r\ncriticism perspective, which includes the stages of description, formal analysis,\r\ninterpretation, and evaluation. Ultimately, this thesis concludes that visual artworks as a medium of self-sublimation by students cannot be considered works without\r\nvalue. This work is a manifestation of the mental problems currently experienced by\r\nstudents. Based on Feldman's art criticism, this study also finds inner significance—\r\nfrom the choice of colors, the shape of the objects in the images, and the stories—\r\nbetween the artwork and its creator.
