While previously viewed as a mere formality, the "Nikah di KUA" trend is now being adopted as a conscious choice across various social strata. However, it remains unclear whether this action is driven by economic rationality (efficiency) or represents a deconstruction of values against complex reception cultures. This research explores the motives of social action and the correlation between choosing the KUA as a venue and the meaning of the essence of marriage in the modern era. This study aims to identify and analyze the dominant motives of Muslim couples conducting their marriage ceremonies at the KUA and to review these motives from the perspective of Islamic Family Law (HKI). The high phenomenon of marriages held directly at the KUA indicates a shift in society regarding the execution of the marriage contract, moving from traditional practices toward administrative ones. This study is a qualitative-descriptive field research. A sociological approach is utilized to observe the operation of law within society. Primary data sources were obtained through in-depth interviews with couples who married at the KUA Kemantren Danurejan, as well as key informants, including the Penghulu (marriage registrar) and the Head of the KUA. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively using an inductive method, employing Max Weber?s Social Action Theory as an analytical lens to dissect the subjective motives of the actors. The results indicate that the motives for conducting marriage ceremonies at the KUA fall into three main categories: 1) Legality Motive, namely the awareness of the urgency of registration to obtain legal certainty and family protection, particularly regarding child status and inheritance rights; 2) Economic and Practical Motives, namely to utilize the zero-rupiah fee facility and avoid the complexity and high costs of wedding feasts (walimah); and 3) Security and Convenience Motives, where the KUA is considered more orderly with standardized processes. Applying Weber's theory, the execution of the marriage ceremony at the KUA is no longer seen merely as the fulfillment of a religious obligation, but as a process of legal modernization. Marriage at the KUA strengthens the position of state law within the private sphere of society, where individual actions are driven by functional awareness (legal needs) and calculative awareness (economic efficiency).
