abstract: Using Clifford Geertz's hermeneutic approach, this study attempts to understand the symbolic meaning of the Rasulan Tradition in Gondang Hamlet. The Rasulan Tradition is an expression of gratitude to Allah SWT for the implementation of the planting season until the harvest time arrives. The Rasulan tradition is also a cultural practice of the Javanese people, especially in Gondang Hamlet, which has many rituals in addition to values, symbols, and cultural messages that describe how the community views life, nature, and human relations with the sacred. This study uses Geertz's hermeneutic theory, which views culture as a system of symbols that must be read like a text.
The use of offerings, ritual prayers, timing, and the roles of traditional and community leaders are symbolic elements in the Rasulan procession, the researchers aimed to uncover their meaning. Using Geertz's hermeneutics, each symbol is placed within the cultural and social context of the Gondang community. Thus, interpretation cannot be conducted separately from the collective experience of the community that carries it out. Data were collected through documentation of the Rasulan procession, interviews, and direct observation.
This study shows that the community views the Rasulan Tradition as a way to show gratitude and respect for ancestors and to maintain the balance between humans, nature, and the Creator. This research is expected to contribute to cultural anthropology research, particularly in efforts to preserve local traditions, through a deeper understanding of the symbols and meanings that live within the community. The understanding formed by this unity of understanding can only be achieved through Geertz's hermeneutic approach.
