The presence of Bassam Al-Jamal, a contemporary Tunisian thinker, offers a new paradigm with an anthropological approach that places asb?b an-nuz?l as an instrument that shapes the collective imagination of early Islamic society (al-mutakhayyal ad-d?n?). Al-Jamal argues that the imaginative narratives in asb?b an-nuz?l, such as the physicality of angels, demons, and events that defy the laws of cause and effect, serve to construct a mentality and belief system that is not fully accommodated by the Qur'an. This thesis aims to critique Al-Jamal's thinking by arguing that al-mutakhayyal ad-d?n? is actually inherent in the Qur'an, not a product of the narratives contained in the asb?b an-nuz?l. This research is qualitative library research. The analysis was conducted by combining a critique of the validity of hadith accounts and ??h? ?usain's literary critique to test the originality of the narrative. This study traces the sources of the accounts used by Al-Jamal and compares them with the internal narrative of the Qur'an to examine the consistency of the origins of this imagination. The results of the analysis reveal two fundamental findings. First, Al-Jamal's construction of the theory of al-mutakhayyal ad-d?n? is built on a fragile foundation of data. He stands in opposition to the established opinion placing the Qur?an hierarchically above hadith. Al-Jamal also disregards the exegesis of Surah Yunus (10:39), which depicts the Quraysh?s rejection of the specific imaginative narratives cultivated by the Qur?an. Second, textual causality analysis proves that the Qur'an has actually been the main source for al-mutakhayyal ad-d?n? without absolute dependence on asb?b an-nuz?l. Thus, the asb?b an-nuz?l narrations that are imaginative in nature are actually only cultural imitations of the Qur'anic narrative. This study concludes that there is a need to reposition the role of asb?b an-nuz?l and reaffirm the autonomy of the Qur'an as the primary source of the Islamic worldview.
