N2  - The development of the electronic music ecosystem in Yogyakarta cannot be
separated from the role of independent communities and collectives that have
been operating independently with limited resources. The Majelis GAUNG was
established as a collaborative initiative that seeks to empower electronic
musicians by bringing them together so that they can work in a connected,
inclusive, and sustainable manner. This study examines the role of Majelis
GAUNG in the empowerment process and the challenges that arise during its
implementation. The study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods
through data collection techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and
documentation. Data analysis is carried out through data reduction, data
presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that the role
of the Majelis GAUNG is reflected in its efforts as a facilitator, connector, and
catalyst that provides a collaborative space across communities, strengthens the
capacity of electronic music practitioners, and facilitates technical, curatorial,
and administrative needs. This is done through a process of awareness raising,
deliberation, knowledge transfer, and the provision of a space for expression.
However, the implementation of empowerment through community networking
still faces a few challenges, including limited funding and legitimacy, differences
in work culture between communities, coordination dynamics, and efforts to
maintain a balance between professionalism and the organic nature of
independent communities. These findings indicate that the Majelis GAUNG is in
the early stages of developing a more structured and sustainable model for
organizing electronic music.
