"Marriage as a fundamental institution in Islam has undergone a shift in meaning within the context of modernity. This shift is also evident among the young Salafi generation in Yogyakarta, where inherited normative religious values are continuously negotiated with modern rationality, expanded access to education, and growing awareness of the risks of marital life. Based on this context, this study focuses on two main issues: why a change in the meaning of marriage occurs among the young Salafi generation in Yogyakarta, and how the dynamics of social change and the pressures of modernity shape new interpretations of marriage.\r\nThis study is a field research with a descriptive-analytical design employing a phenomenological approach to understand the experiences of both older and younger Salafi generations regarding changes in the meaning of marriage. Primary data were obtained through participant observation in intergenerational interactions, semi-structured interviews with informants from both groups, and documentation of Salafi-related materials.\r\nThe findings show that: (1) this change is driven by intergenerational value tensions, expanded access to information through technology, broader educational attainment, and exposure to other cultural influences, all of which create an increasingly complex social environment that demands adjustment. (2) The four social change factors shaping the new meaning of marriage are conflict as a mechanism of social correction, technological development that transforms social awareness, education as a builder of adaptive rationality, and contact with other cultures that triggers processes of value selection. The shift in the meaning of marriage among young Salafi individuals in Yogyakarta represents a structural consequence of modernity’s fast-moving, risk-laden, and difficult-to-control pressures. Marriage is no longer understood merely as a normative obligation to be carried out immediately, but as a life decision requiring comprehensive readiness to minimize potential social, psychological, and economic harm without displacing its religious legitimacy."^^ .
