However, in social reality, differences in beliefs, religious practices, and social interests constitute unavoidable sources of potential tension. This dissertation aims to address two main issues: (1) how the community of Pendowoharjo Village understands religious coexistence in everyday social life, and (2) why religious interpretation, education, and socio–economic–political factors play a significant role in shaping religious coexistence within this plural society. This study conceptualizes coexistence not as a static condition, but as a dynamic process involving interaction, negotiation, and socio-institutional relations within the public sphere. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study and field research methodology. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with religious leaders, village officials, and interfaith community members, participant observation, and documentary analysis. Data analysis was conducted using a descriptive– interpretative method, drawing upon theoretical frameworks of pluralism, coexistence, and tolerance to examine the dynamics of religious relations at the local level. The findings reveal that religious coexistence in Pendowoharjo Village is understood through a strong combination of local cultural values that emphasize communal solidarity, the active role of the village government in creating democratic spaces, and contextual, non-subordinative practices of religious interpretation. Religious interpretation is not positioned in a normative–dogmatic manner, but rather is presented as a social practice that adapts to the practical needs of shared living. Formal and non-formal education function as key media for internalizing values of tolerance, while socio–economic–political factors serve to create relatively equal access and participation within social and religious spheres. This dissertation demonstrates that religious coexistence in Pendowoharjo is formed through the management of lived traditions that respect difference, rather than through the elimination of difference. The contribution of this study lies in reinforcing the perspective that religious coexistence at the village level can develop substantively when supported by inclusive religious interpretations, education oriented toward communal harmony, and public policies that open participatory spaces across religious communities. %Z Prof. Dr. H.
