abstract: This study is motivated by the phenomenon of siri polygamy, which is still prevalent in society, and often causes legal and social problem, as well as gender in equality, especially for woman. This phenomenon is clearly depicted in the film Bidaah, which shows the practice of siri polygamy, accompained by various irregularities, such as manipulation of religious texts, forced marriages, and marriage conducted without official state registration, as well as the exploitation of women through religious legitimization. After depicting the phenomenon of siri polygamy through the film Bidaah, this study analyzes the film using the perspective of Tafsir Al-Misbah because this interpretation offers a moderate, understanding not interpreting polygamy as a recommendation, but as a possibility that is limited by the conditions of justice on responsibility. Based on character of Tafsir Al-Misbah, which uses a contextual and linguistic approach, it is possible to asses the verses on polygamy not only textually, but also by considering the principles of justice and responsibility, so that the concept of polygamy in Tafsir Al-Misbah serves as an analytical tool in this study.
This study is a Library Research with a normative approach, descriptive-analytical in nature, and uses the concept of polygamy in Tafsir Al-Misbah. Primary data was obtained from scenes and dialogues shown in films about siri polygamy, while secondary data was sourced from book, scientific journals, and written documents related to the research object. The data collection technique used the documentation method, while data analysis used a qualitative by linking the representation of siri polygamy in the film with Quraish Shihab thought in Tafsir Al-Misbah.
From the analysis of the research conducted, there are conclusions that indicate that the practice of polygamy depicted in the film Bidaah contains deviations from religion, especially in relation to recommended siri polygamy, the requirements of fairness in polygamy, restrictions, empowerment, law, and the protection of women's rights. This practice reflects the abuse of religious authority for personal gain, which contradicts the main aspects described in Tafsir Al-Misbah. Based on M. Quraish Shihab's analysis in Tafsir Al-Misbah, polygamy is not a recommendation, let alone an obligation, but rather a concession that can be made under certain conditions with strict requirements. Therefore, the practice of siri polygamy as depicted in the film Bidaah cannot be justified, as it contradicts the aspects of justice, restriction, protection, empowerment, and law described in QS. An-Nisa' verses 3 and 129.
