The Golek Garwo program organized by the Forum Ta’aruf Indonesia (FORTAIS) in Yogyakarta represents a social space that brings together individuals who share the intention to marry. In this context, the concept of kafā’ah as a principle of compatibility in Islamic marriage is not only understood as a textual jurisprudential norm but is also practiced through diverse social considerations among participants. This study aims to analyze how the process of partner selection takes place in the Golek Garwo activity and how the concept of kafā’ah is interpreted and practiced by the participants within that process. This research employs a qualitative method with a sociological approach to Islamic law. Data were collected through interviews with participants, alumni, and organizers of the Golek Garwo program, as well as through documentation and observation of the activities. The analysis uses Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice, particularly the concepts of field, habitus, and capital, to understand the dynamics of social practices occurring within the activity. In addition, the perspective of living law is applied to examine how the norm of marital compatibility within the concept of kafā’ah operates and gains social legitimacy through community practices. The findings show that the practice of kafā’ah in the Golek Garwo activity is interpreted flexibly by participants. Religion and the level of religiosity become the primary criteria in selecting a partner, while other factors such as occupation, economic condition, education, family background, maturity, and readiness for marriage function as contextual considerations. These practices are shaped by the interaction between the activity as a social field facilitated by the organizers, the participants’ habitus formed through their social backgrounds and life experiences, and various forms of capital such as religious cultural capital, economic capital, and family social capital. Therefore, kafā’ah within the Golek Garwo activity can be understood as a form of living law that operates through mechanisms of social practice, where the norm of marital compatibility is not static but continuously negotiated and interpreted by individuals within the social field. date: 2026-01-29 date_type: published pages: 144 institution: UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA department: FAKULTAS SYARIAH DAN HUKUM thesis_type: masters thesis_name: other citation: Muhammad Adib Darmawan, NIM.: 23203012054 (2026) PRAKTIK KAFA’AH DALAM PEMILIHAN PASANGAN PADA KEGIATAN GOLEK GARWO (STUDI KASUS DI FORUM TA’ARUF INDONESIA YOGYAKARTA).
