Al-Anbiya’: 107, which contains the concept of raḥmatan lil ‘alamin (blessings for all the worlds), is generally understood within a theological framework as an affirmation of the Prophet Muhammad's apostolic mission to all of nature. In the development of contemporary religious practices, this verse demonstrates the dynamics of meaning when accepted and implemented by the Muslim community within a specific social context. This study examines how a Qur'anic verse moves from the realm of interpretation to social practice, specifically in the formation of the eco-mosque movement at the Al-Muharram Mosque in Bantul. This study aims to examine the verse's reception process, the patterns of interpretation by local actors, and the institutionalization of the meaning of raḥmatan lil ‘ālamīn in mosque-based ecological practices through the Living Qur'an perspective.
The study employed a phenomenological approach with qualitative field methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the mosque's administrators and congregation, participant observation of eco-mosque activities, and documentation of mosque activities and environmental facilities. The text was analyzed descriptively and analytically, linking field findings to classical and contemporary interpretations as the horizon of the verse's meaning. These were then interpreted using Ahmad Rafiq's theory of Quranic reception to trace the shift in meaning from informative to performative reception.
The results show that Q.S. Al-Anbiyā': 107 serves as an ethical foundation that guides the congregation's ecological practices through integration with other verses on preserving mercy, sustainable living, and social sensitivity. The meaning of mercy is understood ecologically and institutionalized in various eco-mosque programs such as water management, waste almsgiving, renewable energy use, and greening movements. These findings demonstrate that the Quran operates as both a normative and performative force shaping collective consciousness and social action. Thus, the eco-mosque at Al-Muharram Mosque represents a transformative reception of the Quran in contemporary religious spaces.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">297.1226 Tafsir Al-Qur'an, Ilmu Tafsir</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-03-05</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_76009"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_76009_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
