However, few research has been done to look at how this media effect is represented in popular media such as drama series. This research aims to address that gap by analyzing how television news broadcasts are depicted in shaping public perception in the Korean drama Pinocchio through the perspective of Cultivation Theory. Developed by George Gerbner, Cultivation Theory is one of the most widely referred when discussing about the influence of media on public perception, thus serves as the main theoretical framework of this research. The research focuses on the question of how Pinocchio depicts the effects of television news exposure on individuals and society based on the concepts of heavy viewers, mainstreaming, and resonance. This research employs a qualitative method with content analysis approach. The data consist of scenes, dialogues, character portrayals, and storylines related to television news broadcasts and audience responses depicted throughout the drama. The findings indicate that Pinocchio depicts television news as a dominant medium capable of shaping public perception through repeated exposure. The drama illustrates mainstreaming when society adopts uniform views based on media narratives, while resonance appears when characters experience emotional impacts due to similarities between their personal experiences and media portrayals. This research concludes that Pinocchio effectively reflects the cultivation process of news media in influencing perceptions of social reality, demonstrating that cultivation theory remains relevant for analyzing media effect in contemporary media contexts.
