However, the practice of absolute obedience (sami'na wa ata'na) risks hindering the development of assertive behavior. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the manners of students toward teachers and assertive behavior at the Al-Cholidiyah Islamic Boarding School in Madiun. This study aims to address the potential conflict between hierarchical obedience values in etiquette and the courage to express oneself required in assertiveness. This study positions itself as an integrative research between local pesantren values (based on the book Adab al-’Ālim wa al-Muta’allim) and modern psychology (through the adaptation of Rathus’ assertiveness scale). A quantitative correlational approach was applied to 54 santri who were sampled using total sampling technique. The analysis techniques used were Pearson's product-moment correlation using statistical software.
