Within the political framework of Indonesia, which officially recognizes only six religions, communities such as AKUR Sunda Wiwitan are frequently placed in subordinate positions. They experience marginalization in administrative affairs, stigmatization in social contexts, and suppression in symbolic domains. In response, the community does not adopt a passive stance but instead engages in resistance through various symbolic, cultural, and political strategies to preserve its existence and expand its space for legitimacy within state structures. This research is guided by the question of how counter-hegemony strategies are developed and enacted by the AKUR Sunda Wiwitan community in confronting state dominance and mainstream religious discourse. Using a qualitative approach and drawing upon Antonio Gramsci’s theory of counter-hegemony,particularly the concepts of organic intellectuals, historical bloc, and war of position. This study understands the community’s resistance as part of a broader effort to construct alternative power formations within social, legal, and discursive arenas that have long been dominated by hegemonic forces. Within this context of resistance, the transformation of identity from Agama Djawa Sunda (ADS) to Adat Karuhun Urang (AKUR) Sunda Wiwitan is not interpreted as a change in the substance of belief, but rather as a symbolic and political strategy. This transformation enables the community to navigate the state’s legal framework and obtain administrative recognition without abandoning their spiritual values. Such a strategy illustrates how identity can serve as an effective political instrument to challenge the symbolic dominance imposed by the state. The findings reveal that counter-hegemony strategies are actively carried out by internal actors who function as organic intellectuals within the community. These actors contribute to the construction of alternative narratives through public rituals, legal advocacy, cultural documentation, and active participation in national discourses that promote pluralism and diversity. These strategies establish new spaces of negotiation that allow the community to disrupt dominant narratives without resorting to direct confrontation. In conclusion, this study argues that the struggle of the AKUR Sunda Wiwitan community is not merely an attempt to preserve cultural identity but also represents a complex, organized, and long-term practice of counter-hegemony. In the pluralistic and symbolically unequal context of Indonesian society, such strategies provide a critical example of how subaltern groups can build symbolic power to achieve recognition, legitimacy, and sustained existential presence.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">297.267 Islam dan Seni, Islam dan Budaya, Seni Islam, Budaya Islam</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2025-07-22</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_76154"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_76154_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
