In the Kotagede area, primbon is often used as a reference to assess the compatibility of prospective partners, particularly through weton calculations. This tradition reflects the interaction between socio-cultural norms and marriage practices within the community. This study aims to examine the use of primbon, especially weton calculations, in family matchmaking practices in Kotagede society and to analyze its position from the perspective of ‘urf in Islamic family law. This research is a field study employing a juridical-empirical and socio-cultural approach, analyzed using a qualitative-descriptive method. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five purposively selected respondents and supported by documentation studies of primbon manuscripts, fiqh literature, and relevant academic sources related to Islamic family law. The results show that the use of primbon, particularly weton calculations in matchmaking, is still practiced in Kotagede society with varying levels of acceptance. Some families regard primbon as a cultural tradition that is not binding, while in families with strong adherence to traditional customs, the results of weton calculations can influence the continuation or even the cancellation of matchmaking. From the perspective of Islamic family law, the validity of marriage is not determined by weton calculations but by the fulfillment of the pillars and conditions of marriage in accordance with Islamic law. The practice of primbon, especially weton calculation, can be understood as a form of ‘urf that exists within society; however, it has the potential to be categorized as ‘urf fasid if it is believed to determine the fate of a household and is used as the primary basis for marital decision-making. Furthermore, in some cases, the use of weton leads to conflict and psychological pressure, which is not in line with the principle of maslahah in Islamic marriage.
