Dewa Ruci is a shadow puppet work believed to have been created by Sunan Kalijaga as a medium for Islamic propagation that integrates Islamic spiritual values with Javanese cultural traditions.
This study aims to understand the reception mechanisms of Javanese Muslim audiences towards Islamic values embedded in Javanese mystical narratives.
The research method used is qualitative with Wolfgang Iser's reception theory approach, focusing on the concepts of blanks, indeterminacy, implied reader, and actual reader. Research data was obtained through in-depth interviews with puppet masters Ki Burhan Soekarto and Ki Sri Hastanto, as well as analysis of the narrative structure of the Dewa Ruci story. The analysis was conducted by identifying narrative gaps, analyzing the construction of ideal readers, and understanding the process of meaning concretization by puppet masters and audiences.
The research results show that the Dewa Ruci story uses strategic narrative gap strategies that allow Islamic interpretation without eliminating Javanese identity. Bima's spiritual journey is successfully transformed into a representation of a Muslim's search for the essence of divinity. This story constructs an implied reader as a Javanese Muslim who has dual understanding of wayang traditions and Islamic values. Puppet masters as actual readers perform concretization through the actualization of tawhid concepts, ma'rifah interpretation, and suluk meaning in the context of Sufism. This reception process produces contextual Islam that combines the substance of Islamic teachings with forms of Javanese cultural expression, creating an authentic Indonesian Islamic model.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">297.74 Dakwah Islam, Penyebaran Islam</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2025-08-22</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_76547"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_76547_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
