This phenomenon raises questions from the perspective of Islam, particularly concerning the boundaries of self-care and the prohibition against men resembling women as mentioned in the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This study examines the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad regarding the prohibition of men resembling women, as recorded in Sunan Ibn Mājah No. 1904. The hadith is analyzed through a qualitative, library-based research approach by collecting and examining data from primary sources, namely the hadith collection of Sunan Ibn Mājah, as well as secondary sources such as other hadith compilations, books, journals, and relevant literature. To assess the authenticity of the hadith, the study employs the method of takhrīj through analysis of the chain of transmission (sanad) and the content (matn), followed by the method of iʿtibār to trace shawāhid and mutābiʿāt of the narration. The understanding of this hadith is not limited to a textual interpretation but is also analyzed using Nurun Najwah’s theory of hadith comprehension, which encompasses four aspects: linguistic analysis, historical context, thematic study, and the search for the core idea..
The results of this study indicate that the ḥadīth is classified as ḥasan li dhātih in terms of its chain quality. However, a ḥadīth about the prohibition of men resembling women narrated by Ibn Mājah, which was initially considered ḥasan li dhātih, is supported by other narrations from Abū Dāwūd and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal of the same rank and by a narration from al-Bukhārī that is ṣaḥīḥ. Therefore, the ḥadīth is elevated to the level of ṣaḥīḥ li ghayrih. In terms of matn quality, the ḥadīth is also categorized as maqbūl, as it does not contradict the Qur’ān, other ḥadīths, sound reasoning, sensory perception, or historical facts, and it exhibits the characteristics of prophetic speech.
The analysis of the meaning of "resembling" in the ḥadīth shows that the term refers to deliberate actions by men to imitate the distinctive traits of women, whether in appearance, behavior, or expression—traits that are socially and religiously recognized as feminine identity. However, in the context of skincare use, such actions do not fall under the prohibited category, as skincare is understood as part of maintaining cleanliness and bodily health, which is encouraged in Islam regardless of gender.
This study further relates the meaning of the hadith to contemporary phenomena, namely the use of skincare by men. The results of the analysis indicate that men’s use of skincare cannot automatically be regarded as a form of tasyabbuh (imitation), since its primary orientation lies in maintaining skin health and cleanliness. Conversely, when it extends to the use of cosmetic products or make-up aimed at enhancing beauty for aesthetic purposes, it becomes closer to the practice of resembling women. In such cases, the hadith prohibiting men from imitating women may serve as a boundary within Islamic law. Therefore, the understanding of this hadith needs to be applied proportionally: allowing the use of skincare insofar as it serves health and hygiene purposes, while avoiding the use of make-up that resembles feminine practices.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">297.21 Ilmu Hadis</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2025-08-15</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="TMD_eprint_76554"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights_eprint_76554_mods"><mets:mdWrap MDTYPE="MODS"><mets:xmlData><mods:useAndReproduction>
