"This study examines the transmission and reception of Arabic \r\ngrammatical knowledge within the pesantren tradition of Cirebon through an in\r\ndepth analysis of three locally written commentaries (sharḥ) on al-Jurumiyyah: \r\nZubdat an-Naqiyyah by KH Aqil Siroj (Kempek), Tahrīran Jurūmiyyah by KH \r\nMuhammad (Kebon Jambu), and Tahrīrān al-Jurūmiyyah by KH Asmawi (Az\r\nZiyadah). The research is motivated by the strong tradition of instrumental \r\nsciences (ʿilm al-ālah—particularly naḥw and ṣarf) in Cirebon’s salafiyah \r\npesantren, which historically functioned as key centers for the pedagogy of kitab \r\nkuning in West Java. Design/Method/Approach — Employing an applied \r\nphilological approach, reception analysis, and educational ethnography, this study \r\ntraces the chains of scholarly transmission, the structural characteristics of local \r\nsharḥ compositions, and the pedagogical strategies implemented through \r\nbandongan, sorogan, lalaran, and oral–written examinations. Findings — The \r\nfindings reveal that vernacular sharḥ function both as instructional tools facilitating \r\ncomprehension of classical Arabic texts and as a form of vernacularization of \r\nArabic grammar that demonstrates pesantren scholars’ capacity for local \r\nintellectual reproduction. Pedagogical technologies such as makna gandul \r\n(symbolic markers such as ر, ن, ج), contextual iʿrāb examples, applicative \r\nexplanations, and Cirebonese idioms significantly assist beginner students in \r\ninternalizing grammatical principles. Research Implications — This study \r\nconcludes that the Cirebonese local sharḥ tradition plays a significant role in \r\npreserving the continuity of the classical naḥw curriculum while simultaneously \r\nenriching context-based models of Arabic grammatical learning within the \r\npesantren educational system."^^ .
