responsibilities and and for their parents or siblings. This dual burden often leads
members of the sandwich generation to postpone marriage. This phenomenon of
marriage postponement has a significant impact on the shift in the average age of
marriage, particularly in rural communities, including Sonorejo Village. Many
individuals in Sonorejo Village are forced to postpone marriage beyond the ideal
standards and societal norms regarding marriage age due to the priority of family
economic stability. The central issues of this study are why the sandwich generation
in Sonorejo Village chooses to postpone marriage, what factors underlie this
decision, and how this phenomenon is viewed from the perspective of Islamic legal
sociology and maqāṣid as-syarī'ah. This study aims to understand the phenomenon
of marriage postponement as a form of the sandwich generation’s social response
to changes in family structure, economic pressures, and societal patterns.
This field research is descriptive-analytical in nature, using a normativesociological
approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with
members of the sandwich generation who have decided to postpone marriage, as
well as through documentary analysis. The theoretical framework used is the theory
of Islamic legal sociology according to M. Atho Mudzhar, which emphasizes the
interaction between legal texts and social reality, as well as the concept of maqāṣid
as-syarī'ah. The qualitative analysis was conducted by linking field findings
regarding the social reality of the sandwich generation in Sonorejo Village with the
principles of Islamic law, in order to understand the dynamics of the application of
Islamic law in responding to changes in the social and economic structure of society.
The research findings indicate that the delay in marriage among the sandwich
generation in Sonorejo Village is driven by several factors, namely: the desire to
prepare oneself, both financially and emotionally; not yet having found the right
partner; and the priority of meeting family needs first. From the perspective of
Islamic legal sociology, this phenomenon constitutes a form of personal ijtihad by
the sandwich generation as a rational consideration to avoid greater harm. This
delay in marriage is also consistent with the principles of Maqāṣid as-Syarī'ah,
particularly the protection of life (ḥifẓ an-nafs), reason (ḥifẓ al-’aql), lineage (ḥifẓ
an-nasl), and property (ḥifẓ al-māl) as a preventive measure to ensure household
stability and prevent potential harm in the future.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">340.115 Sosiologi Hukum</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-05-21</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS SYARIAH DAN HUKUM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mods:mods>
