The study is motivated by differences in perspectives between Islamic law, which emphasizes the fulfillment of the pillars and requirements of marriage, and Batak Angkola customary law, which emphasizes customary recognition through the implementation of specific traditional ceremonies. These differences give rise to normative conflicts within society, particularly concerning the social legitimacy of marriage and the status of descendants within the customary structure. This study aims to analyze the forms of conflict between Islamic law and Batak Angkola customary law in marriage practices and to examine their social implications for the status and social acceptance of descendants within the indigenous community. This research employs a qualitative method with an empirical-sociological approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving traditional leaders, religious leaders, and the Batak Angkola community in Portibi District. The analysis applies Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory and the theory of ‘urf in Islamic law to understand the relationship between social structures, customary practices, and religious norms in community life. The findings indicate that conflicts between Islamic law and Batak Angkola customary law occur in several marriage practices, such as the prohibition of same-clan marriages, the implementation of customary ceremonies, and the obligation of sinamot. Islamic law considers a marriage valid based on the fulfillment of the pillars and requirements of marriage, whereas customary law requires recognition through traditional ceremonies as a form of social legitimacy within the Dalihan Na Tolu system. These conflicts are influenced by customary traditions, changes in religious understanding, socio-economic conditions, and the strong kinship structure within the community. The social implications of these conflicts affect the social status of descendants, particularly regarding social acceptance, the use of clan names, and participation in customary activities. This study concludes that the Batak Angkola community tends to compromise between Islamic law and customary law through processes of value adjustment and social practice.
