patience. As long as humans live in this world, they will never be free from trials and
tests. Therefore, an attitude is needed to help humans face trials and tests. Sufis have
different explanations of patience based on quotations from various sources, both from
the Qur’ān and the Ḥadīṡ. The patience put forward by Sufis, both in terms of
definition, essence, and practice, aims to provide a simple explanation for students and
readers of their books, although each Sufi has a background in defining patience,
including spiritual experience, approach, and emphasis on the meaning of patience.
This study focuses on the explanation of patience according to one of the prominent
Sufi figures in Sufism, al-Jīlānī, in his book al-Fatḥ al-Rabbānī. He explains patience
as one way to draw closer to God, along with alternative explanations for when
someone is unable to be patient.
Based on this background, this study formulates the problem of patience
according to Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī in his book, al-Fath al-Rabbānī. The
purpose of this study is to contribute to scientific knowledge in the field of Sufism.
Practically, the results are expected to help readers emulate the value of patience in
facing life, both personally, socially, and spiritually.
This research is a library research, and the data referred to are notes, documents,
or previous research. The type of data used is qualitative. The data sources used in this
study are primary and secondary data. The primary data refers to the book, al-Fath al-
Rabbānī, while the secondary data are documents relevant to the research topic,
whether translations, books, or articles. The data collection method used is
documentation. This study uses the theoretical framework of maqāmāt and aḥwāl in
Sufism studies to analyze patience, and philology as the method of data analysis.
The results of this study are the explanation of patience in the book al-Fath al-
Rabbānī, including the definition of patience, the command to be patient, patience in
the face of trials, the benefits of patience, patience in carrying out qaḍā' and qadar, and
patience with Allah. The result is a categorization of patience, divided into three levels
according to each group's ability. The first level, patience for the layperson, is carried
out upon command from Allah for anything that requires patience. Furthermore,
patience at this stage is usually still in the form of coercion. The second level, patience
for special individuals, does not stop at refraining from something but, one level above,
becomes a form of inner stability that keeps them steadfast in adhering to the Shari'ah
and continues to discover the meaning of things, so that patience here is no longer
coercion. The third level, patience for very special individuals or abdāl, is the highest
level of patience because it is experienced with Allah.</mods:abstract><mods:classification authority="lcc">297.261 Islam dan Filsafat, Filsafat Islam</mods:classification><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8061">2026-05-04</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA;FAKULTAS USHULUDDIN DAN PEMIKIRAN ISLAM</mods:publisher></mods:originInfo><mods:genre>Thesis</mods:genre></mods:mods>
